At thirteen minutes past midnight, local time, New Year's Day 1991, a magnitude
7.6 earthquake was detected near the northern end of the New Madrid Fault Zone
in central North America. The epicentre was in Crittenden County, Kentucky.
The closest named city is Cave-In-Rock, Hardin County, Illinois, 5 KM to the
North.
The shock was felt strongly in and minor damage has been reported from: St
Louis, MO; Indianapolis, IN; Memphis, TN; & Louisville, KY. Tall buildings
swayed and items fell from shelves and tables in Chicago, Cincinnati, and New
Orleans.
No ground reports have been received from within a 50 KM radius. Electrical
power has been disrupted in Paducah, KY and Evansville, IN.
Barge traffic has been interrupted on the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee
Rivers. Lock and Dam 53 at Monkeys Eyebrow, KY has been destroyed and the Ohio
River is forming a new channel to the south through Ballard County Wildlife
Management Area.
The Ohio River is reported to have run dry at the Interstate 24 bridge at
Paducah, KY. The Tennessee River has reversed flow at its mouth at Paducah,
KY.
Several fires are reported at chemical plants at Calvert City, KY. Flames are
clearly visible from Ledbetter, KY, a distance of 8 KM. The Texas Gas
Transmission Pipeline is reported ruptured at Gilbertsville, KY and gas
pressure has dropped at all points to the East.
The Magnolia Gas Storage Field at Magnolia, KY has burst. Flames reached a
height of 12 KM. Zero, on the LaRue & Hart County line, KY has been expunged
from the face of the Earth. Louisville, KY has lost all gas pressure. All
emergency electrical generating capacity has been brought on line. Brownouts
are common in rural Jefferson County and there is fear the the Louisville
electrical grid will fail. The temperature at Louisville, KY midnight local
time was -21C (-6F). Automobile traffic is reported to be heavy, with panic
flight both into and out of the city.
All attempts to reach personnel on the ground at Marion, Crittenden County, KY
have failed.
FEMA has been alerted and has promised to respond after the holiday.
